A 10 year analysis of deaths in childhood from cystic fibrosis at two London centres by Urquhart et al in February's Arch Dis Child reveals that the number of deaths was small with 14.2 years as the median age of death. They also comment that deaths were often unpredictable with lung function five years prior to death not presenting an early warning. Almost all died in hospital and nearly half were ventilated. Care was withdrawn in half the cases and only a third were receiving palliative care.
