A case control study by Marina Aloi and colleagues from the University of Rome published in the Journal of Pediatrics shows that young people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at increased risk of developing early endothelial dysfunction (increased intima media thickness (IMT) and reduced flow-mediated dilation (FMD)) despite lower body mass index. In their multivariate analysis IBD was an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis representing a new challenge in the management of IBD and requiring prevention strategies for cardiovascular disease.
