The BMJ reports that a judge has visited a 15 year old girl in hospital to explain why he has made her a ward of court. Mr Justice Hayden sitting in the Court of Protection in London declared that it was in the best interests of the girl, who vomits up to 30 times a day and weighs 35kg, to have a nasojejeunal tube inserted and to be fed through it. The unnamed girl has been in hospital for several months and no organic cause for her symptoms has been found despite extensive investigation. The judge said that NHS trusts involved in dispute with families over their child's treatment should not spend too long trying to secure parent's agreement before seeking the decision of the court. The paediatric gastroenterologist involved acknowledged that he should have come to the court sooner.
