Emergency Contraception available from Welsh Pharmacists

posted 8 Apr 2011, 13:02 by Damian Wood
From the 1st April 2011 seven hundred Welsh pharmacies are able to provide young women, including those under 16 years of age, with free emergency contracpetion. Parts of Wales have some of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the UK, however this initiative will see emergency contraception available in around half of all Welsh pharmacies. Health minister Edwina Hart announced the move last November, saying she wanted professional advice available without appointment and "easily accessible within the 72-hour time span necessary for emergency contraception to be most effective". The morning-after pill is free to women in England if it is prescribed by a GP or family planning clinic. Free emergency contraception has been available to over thirteens in Scottish pharmacies since 2008
